About Honor Flight Tallahassee
Honor Flight Tallahassee was born within the ranks of Leon County Emergency Medical Services during the summer of 2010 after taking its cues from other hubs in South Florida that were started by EMS agencies. To learn how LCEMS might make Honor Flight a reality in North Florida, a representative, Mac Kemp, was sent to the 2010 Honor Flight Network Annual Conference to gather information.
Energized by what he experienced, Mac and the LCEMS team submitted a proposal to the County Administrator who approved the undertaking. The project was then presented to the Leon County Commission who motioned the approval unanimously. The work had just begun.
Our Board of Trustees was established on July 18, 2011. Our mandate began with fundraising, developing an organizational structure, and obtaining IRS non-profit status.
In conjunction with the Board’s hard work, there were countless volunteer hours donated by dedicated LCEMS staff members and local citizens in addition to the substantial support provided by various organizations throughout Leon County.
Our efforts paid off on May 11, 2013, when the first planeload of well-deserving military veterans made their way to Washington, D.C.
We’ve been able to host subsequent flights on an annual basis. We are both humbled by, and grateful to, all who continue to help Honor Flight Tallahassee pursue its mission. Our efforts are a very small token of appreciation for those who courageously served our nation.
